Constipation means different things to different people. For some people, it refers to the decrease in frequency of bowel movements. For others, it means difficulty in passing stools (straining) or incomplete evacuation. The frequency of bowel movements varies greatly from person to person, ranging from three per day to three per week. From a medical standpoint, constipation is defined as fewer than three movements per week.
